industrial free cooling is the process of reducing heat through a change in air pressure caused by volume expansion. In nature, adiabatic cooling is often associated with elevation. As seen with cloud formations, an air mass that is heated expands and becomes less dense. Being less dense, it is lighter and rises above a higher-pressure air mass. Having reached areas with less dense air, it further expands, losing energy that was gained, and cooling as it does so. When the cooling air crosses the dew point, moisture in the air accumulates as clouds. With enough moisture and cooling comes precipitation. The principles of adiabatic cooling are also applied to increase humidity in facilities.

Energy saving free cooling is possible for much of the year for many applications.
The wetted surface – Adiabatic Cooling option enables water to be cooled to within 6 °C of ambient wet bulb, water is used to increase the cooling effect when the ambient dry bulb is 3°C above the design wet bulb – for most of the year the unit operates as a conventional air blast cooler.
Specifications can be tailored to suit each application, with different materials, sizes, noises and cooling mediums available.

Principle of Operation

Hot Process fluid enters the inlet header connection, shown in red. Heat from the fluid dissipates through the coil tubes surface and out to the fins. Ambient air is drawn in over the coil surface by the fan located at the top of the unit. Heat from the process fluid transfers to the air and discharges to the atmosphere. Cool process fluid exits the unit through the connections shown in blue.

Standard tubes are 5/8", 1/2” ,5/8", 20, 1" OD, 304, 316 stainless steel, copper, titanium, hot dip galvanized steel or aluminum. Tubes are arranged inline in the direction of airflow for maximum heat transfer with minimum air side pressure drop.
